What is Seborrhoeic Keratosis?
Seborrhoeic keratosis (also spelled seborrheic keratosis) is a common non-cancerous skin growth. It appears as waxy, wart-like growths that vary in color, ranging from tan to black, and can have a rough or smooth texture. These growths typically develop on areas of the skin that are exposed to the sun, such as the face, chest, shoulders, or back. Seborrhoeic keratosis is benign and does not usually cause any symptoms, although it can sometimes itch or become irritated. While the exact cause is unknown, they tend to increase in number with age and may be influenced by genetics and sun exposure. Seborrhoeic keratosis does not require treatment unless it becomes bothersome or for cosmetic reasons, in which case it can be removed by our clinicians, at Skin Health & Beauty Clinic by electrocautery.
What Causes
Seborrhoeic Keratoses?
The exact cause of Seborrhoeic Keratosis is not fully understood. However, several factors may contribute to their development:
Age: Seborrhoeic keratoses are more common in older individuals, with the prevalence increasing with age. They often begin to appear after the age of 40 and become more numerous as individuals get older.
Genetics: There is evidence to suggest that genetics play a role in the development of seborrhoeic keratosis. People with a family history of these growths are more likely to develop them themselves.
Sun exposure: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is thought to be a contributing factor in the development of seborrhoeic keratoses, as they often appear on areas of the skin that are exposed to the sun, such as the face, chest, shoulders, and back.
Hormonal changes: Fluctuations in hormone levels, such as those that occur during pregnancy or as a result of hormone therapy, may also influence the development of seborrhoeic keratoses.
Is Seborrhoeic Keratoses Removal A Safe Procedure?
Yes, Seborrhoeic Keratoses removal by electrocautery is generally considered a safe procedure when performed by a qualified aesthetic professional at Skin Health & Beauty. Electrocautery involves using a small probe to deliver a controlled electric current to the growth, effectively burning and removing the tissue. This method is often chosen for its precision and minimal scarring potential.
